Oaty Soda Bread {Homemade bread in under an hour}

Whip up a loaf of oaty soda bread in under an hour with just 10 minutes preparation and no kneading or resting. I make soda bread with oats, wholemeal flour and plain flour as it's more healthy and I like the flavour.

I like to bake soda bread in a loaf tin as I find it easier to slice, but traditionally it's baked on a flat baking sheet and has a big cross cut in the top. This oaty soda bread is quite dense and filling. It's lovely with soup, cheese and chutney or pate.

Oaty Soda Bread {Homemade bread in under an hour}

  • Time: 10 mins prep + 45 mins baking

  • Cost: 5p per slice

  • Calories: 129 per slice

  • Makes: 15 slices

Ingredients:

  • 200g plain wholemeal flour

  • 200g plain white flour

  • 100g oats, plus extra for sprinkling

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda

  • 450ml milk mixed with 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Method:

  1. Pre-heat the oven to gas 6 / 200 C / 180 fan.

  2. Mix all the dry ingredients in a bowl. Make a well in the centre and pour in the milk and lemon juice. Mix together using a blunt knife until just combined. If it's a little too wet, add a little more flour, but try to keep the dough more wet than dry.

  3. Pour into a greased loaf tin and sprinkle with oats if you like. Alternatively, place on a greased baking sheet and make a cross shape using a sharp knife in the top of the dough. Bake for around 45 minutes until golden brown and cooked through. Allow to cool and slice.
